Choosing a floor squeegee: width and blade

A floor squeegee is a simple tool with three variables that decide whether a job takes ten minutes or forty: blade width, blade material and handle length. Get any of them wrong and you will be going over the same patch three times.

This is what the counter tells people who come in for one.

Width: wider is not automatically faster

The instinct is to buy the widest blade available, and for a long open run — a garage floor, a warehouse aisle, a driveway — that instinct is right. A 24-inch blade clears roughly twice the area per pass as a 12-inch one.

The instinct fails as soon as there are obstacles. A wide blade cannot get between a washing machine and a wall, cannot follow the edge of a shower tray, and rides over the dip in front of a drain instead of pushing water into it. On a floor with fixtures, a 12 to 18-inch blade finishes faster because it needs fewer awkward second passes.

The other limit is pressure. Downward force from your arms is spread across the whole blade. Double the width and you halve the pressure per inch, which on a rough or uneven surface means water goes under the blade rather than in front of it.

The practical answer for most people: 18 inches for a general-purpose floor blade, 24 inches only if the floor is genuinely open and reasonably flat.

Blade material

Rubber is the default. It has enough give to conform to a slightly uneven floor and enough stiffness to move standing water. It handles cold reasonably and hot water well. Rubber does perish eventually, particularly if it is stored resting on the blade, and it will take a permanent set if left standing that way.

Foam is more absorbent and better on rough surfaces like brushed concrete, because it deforms into the texture instead of skating over it. It does not last as long, and it holds dirt.

Silicone is the newer option — flexible over a wider temperature range, does not take a set as readily, easier to wipe clean. It costs more.

Whichever you buy, store it hanging or on its side. A blade left standing on its edge in a corner will bend and stay bent, and a bent blade cannot seal against a floor.

Handle length is a back problem

This is the variable people ignore and then regret. A handle that is too short forces you to bend, and bending for twenty minutes over a garage floor is how people hurt themselves.

The rough guide: the top of the handle should reach somewhere between your chest and your chin when the head is on the floor. For most adults that is 54 to 60 inches. Telescoping handles cover a range and are worth having if more than one person uses the tool.

Handles come in steel, aluminium and fibreglass. Steel is the stiffest and heaviest, aluminium is the usual compromise, fibreglass does not corrode and is worth it around salt or chemicals.

How to actually use one

Three things separate a clean floor from a streaked one.

  • Angle the blade slightly rather than pushing it square. A blade at an angle moves water sideways as it advances, which lets you steer it towards a drain instead of piling it up.
  • Overlap each pass by a few inches. The edge of a pass always leaves a thin line.
  • Push, do not pull, on a wet floor. Pulling walks you backwards through the water you just moved.

On a garage floor, start at the back and work towards the door in overlapping strips. On a wash-down floor with a drain, work in from the perimeter.

Rotating heads

Some floor squeegees have a head that pivots against the handle. It is genuinely useful for getting under and around fixtures without changing where you stand, and it is one more joint to wear out. For an open floor a fixed head is stiffer and simpler; for a bathroom or a plant room with pipework the rotating head earns its place.

What a floor squeegee is not for

It is not a broom. Dragging grit under a rubber blade cuts the blade and scratches a sealed or epoxy floor. Sweep or blow the debris first, then squeegee the water.

It is not a window tool either. The blade is too stiff and too wide, and the handle geometry is wrong. That job belongs to the window and glass squeegees.

Looking after it

Rinse the blade after use, especially after anything soapy or oily — detergent residue makes rubber slippery and stops it gripping the floor on the next job. Wipe it dry and hang it up.

Check the blade every few months by holding it up to a light: nicks show as gaps, and a gap is a streak on every single pass. Replace the blade rather than the tool where the maker offers one.
